Scenario 1: Your teenage daughter tells you her boyfriend smokes marijuana – and she has tried it.

Scenario 2. Your teenage daughter has been riding on the back of her b/f’s motorcycle – and he had been drinking alcohol.

I have recently had both of these told to me by my somewhat rebellious 19 year old daughter. The scariest? – my vote is for #2 – it’s hard to die from smoking pot, but riding on the back of some drunken idiot’s m/cycle is positively lethal. Although I don’t particularly like her hanging out with potheads, at least she isn’t in peril of her life. I went a little ballistic at #2, but I don’t want to scare her off from telling me what she gets up to.

I am curious how other parents would deal with this.
Thanks for all the responses – I appreciate it. Re. the fact that she is taking to me about this: I put that down to the fact that she knows that I wasn’t the most sensible of teenagers myself – I did my fair share of hell raising (my folks still tell the tales), and I’m no stranger to motorcycles, drinking and drugs.I am lucky that I managed to raise such a beautiful person, but I am also worried that she follows my example.

I considered subscribing to _Child Development_, a scholarly journal that publishes a lot of the leading research articles on parenting and child outcomes, but it’s subscription fee is horrendous. (Set for university libraries, not parents, I guess.)

Most magazines seem to give very short shrift to research. They interview so-called experts for ideas from time to time, but you can tell that these folks are rarely research scientists.

So have any of you found any good methods of doing this?

This is a wide spread problem and a major TV network wants to do a story on this issue. We need teens who are prepared to speak up. Binge drinking is a major concern and parents need to take responsibility for their actions. I know parents are supplying alcohol to their own kids and their kids friends, kids as young as 13.

My wife and I love our kids but we cant seem to agree on anything that has to do with our parenting methods. When she says no I say yes, when I so no she says yes. My biggest fear is raising two spoiled boys and I am afraid that my wife is spoiling them to death, and I dont mean spoil them with love, I mean give in to their every whim.
