Yes, there are sane solutions--in this problem-solving parent's guide from the bestselling author of Yes, Your Teen Is Crazy How should you respond when your teen comes home late? Wears inappropriate clothes? Is pregnant, or flunking out? You'll find the answers here--right at your fingertips--in this quick-reference manual from one of the leading experts on adolescent behavior. As someone who has counseled hundreds of teens in his practice and as a father of two teens himself, Dr. Michael Bradley understands how teenagers can drive you crazy. Offering practical "first response" advice, he tells you exactly what to do and what NOT to do in about every scenario you'll ever face with your kid, from messy rooms and monstrous moods to drug abuse and depression. Michael Bradley, Ed.D., is a psychologist and award-winning author specializing in adolescent behavior and is certified by the American College of Professional Psychology in the treatment of substance abuse disorders. He has appeared frequently on "Today," "Good Morning America," CNN, and National Public Radio, and he has authored several books including the bestselling Yes, Your Teen is Crazy: Loving Your Kid Without Losing Your Mind. He resides near Philadelphia where he worries incessantly that his own two children might grow up to be people like him. If you own a teen (or feel owned by one) the experts agree you need this book ". . . a wonderful, straightforward, and extremely helpful book. Michael Bradley's advice is always compassionate, very much on the mark, and, above all, realistic." --Anthony E. Wolf, Ph.D., bestselling author of Get Out of My Life, but First Could You Drive Me and Cheryl to the Mall "Raising teens can be quite a bumpy ride. When Things Get Crazy with Your Teen supplies an easy-to-read, practical, and valuable road map for the trip." --David Walsh, Ph.D., author of Why Do They Act That Way? "Exceptional. . . . This is a book that I will highly recommend, not just to parents of my adolescent patients but for all parents attempting to raise teenagers in today's complex and stress-filled world." --Sam Goldstein, Ph.D., coauthor of Raising Resilient Children "Parents will find fresh insights and concrete, no-nonsense help throughout . . .." --Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish, authors of How to Talk So Teens Will Listen & Listen So Teens Will Talk

Unfortunately, the same can often be said of their treatment: blaming parents for the illness, many eating disorder programs exclude parents and widen the rift in an already shattered family. This powerful and controversial book by top researchers James Lock and Daniel le Grange argues that parents are not the culprits but the key to their teen's recovery. Based on new research, Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder shows how parents can break the disorder's control over their child's mind and re-establish normal eating and family relations. The odds for full recovery drop precipitously if treatment is delayed. A radically important wake up call, this book urges parents to act now.

A veteran journalist navigates the mother-daughter relationship at its most crucial moment With the eye of a reporter, the curiosity of an anthropologist, and the open (and sometimes wounded) heart of a mother, award-winning author Lauren Kessler embeds herself in her about-to-be-teenage daughter's life. In seventh- and eighth-grade classrooms, at home, online, at the mall, and at summer camp, Kessler observes, investigates, chronicles- and participates in-the life of a twenty-first-century teen. As she begins to better understand and appreciate her mercurial daughter, their relationship-at first a mirror of the author's difficult relationship with her own mother-lurches in new directions. With the help of a resident teen expert (her daughter), as well as teachers, doctors, therapists, and other mothers, Kessler illuminates the age-old struggle from both sides, gracefully interweaving personal experience with journalistic inquiry. Funny, poignant, and insightful, My Teenage Werewolf explores the fascinating and scary world of today's teen as it comes to grips with the single most important relationship in a woman's life.

But when and how is it appropriate to start teaching your kids about the almighty dollar? Joline Godfrey, founder and CEO of Independent Means, Inc.—the leading provider of financial programs for kids and their parents—has the answers. In RAISING FINANCIALLY FIT KIDS, Godfrey aims her friendly, approachable, and practical text at parents and grandparents of children ages 5 to 18. At the heart of the book is a developmental map covering 10 specific money skills children can master by the age of 18 to become financially secure adults. Godfrey’s fitness plan doesn’t encourage children to accumulate wealth for its own sake; rather, it helps children achieve independence and become responsible members of families and communities by teaching habitual savings, smart money management, and decision-making skills. More than just a money book, RAISING FINANCIALLY FIT KIDS will help you send your kids into the world as balanced young adults who exercise good judgment, practice responsible habits, and live financially stable lives.

Throughout his college years, Toren Volkmann partied like there was no tomorrow. And like so many parents, his mother, Chris, overlooked Toren's growing alcohol problem. But when he graduated, Toren realized that he had become a full-blown alcoholic with a college diploma. Written from the viewpoints of both mother and son, this is a riveting, enlightening, and heartbreakingly true story of a family that was able to confront the fear, pain, and denial that threatened to destroy them-and survive the epidemic of teenage drinking that is putting America's future at risk.

The newly updated and expanded guide to raising a teenager with an attention deficit disorder is more comprehensive than ever. Thousands more parents can rely on Dendy's compassionately presented expertise based on the latest research and decades of her experience as a parent, teacher, school psychologist, and mental health counselor. Her book looks at key areas that make adolescence--an already challenging time of life--potentially more difficult for kids with ADD or ADHD: academics, dating, driving, socializing, and greater independence. TEENAGERS WITH ADD AND ADHD gives parents insight on everything from understanding the diagnosis to treatment options, and from behavioral and academic issues, to parent involvement and self-advocacy. The new edition includes additional or updated information in several areas. A separate chapter on medications provides details on specific drugs, including many new ones, and what research shows about their effectiveness in improving attention, impulse control, and distractibility. Dendy discusses new findings about the role of executive function problems and how they relate to teenagers difficulties with organizational skills, long-range planning, and staying on task. She advises parents on their role in working with schools to find strategies for academic success. Teenagers also speak out about their condition, and Dendy points to ways to involve them in their own treatment plan. In addition, the book covers coexisting disorders such as learning disabilities, depression, anxiety, Tourette syndrome, and Asperger syndrome. Since 1995, this nuts and bolts guide has given parents hope and empowerment. It's chockfull of the latest data and proven strategies that can help manage the symptoms of ADD and ADHD at home and school.
