Are Atheists like teenagers?

C asked:

Are Atheists like teenagers?

Teenagers deny their parents, but enjoy what their parents do for them.

Atheists ignore God,but do not mind the joy at Christmas, and other benefits from Him.

    I believe in my parents.

Good for you. Your logic is undeniably stupid.

More like toddlers and really senior seniors. You can’t reason with them.

Which is why most parents of recalcitrant teenagers burn them to death in the oven.

  7. By Reality is my Rorschach on May 17, 2009 | Reply

I can prove my parents exist.
We don’t deny God. We don’t reject God, or hate God, or rebel against God.

We do not believe in God. How many gods are there? None! We deny God no more than you deny Thor, Zeus, Horus, Baal, or Ganesh.

This is how logic works. You can bend statements to make comparisions that may or not be accurate.
I do like your metaphor, though.
If I believed in a personified, singular god, I would totally use this one.

Glad you brought it up, because your whole notion of ‘god’ is really just an abstraction of your parents.

Now, go take care of yourself…

…or did you just want to stay a child for the rest of your life?

Most atheists I know have great respect and appreciation for their parents.

    But yeah, I totally agree.

Christmas is a pagan ritual that was usurped by the church. So yeah I”ll enjoy christmas.

There’s a difference. Most teenagers’ brains aren’t developed enough to understand consequences for their actions. Atheists can and don’t give a hoot.

Are Christians like grumpy old men?

Grumpy old men need help wiping but refuse it so they stink.

Grumpy old men are to set in their ways to take new information into logical account. They do not get joy from new television shows and other benefits of science and technology.

Odd how this works isn’t it?

No teenager I know denies their parents exist. If a parent were as absent as this supposed deity, they’d lose custody rights.

  18. By lainiebsky on Jun 5, 2009 | Reply

Joy at Christmas does not come from your god, it comes from people who think of the season as one of good will.

Isn’t it more accurate to say that fundies are like teenagers in that they deny science but enjoy what science does for them?

  19. By Troma luv on Jun 8, 2009 | Reply

they have a relgion just as everyone else does…..its just a religion of non belief, but its still a belief that is often treated the same as a religion in how they defend it etc… evolution etc etc. Some are passive, some are fanatical.

  20. By Pirate AM? on Jun 10, 2009 | Reply

No, sorry. I’ll forgo the obvious comparison of Christians to children believing in Santa.

  21. By Ben D on Jun 13, 2009 | Reply

Wtf? Atheists know their parents exist, there is a huge difference here…
You don;t gotta believe in Jesus to celebrate x mas. Seriously… Most of the people who celebrate it aren’t religious at all. They celebrate it because it is a holiday. That’s it

  22. By Christian101 on Jun 13, 2009 | Reply

I love Christmas. It has nothing to do with god. I love the tree and lights and exchanging gifts. I love food and friends. I don’t ignore god. I can’t ignore something that doesn’t exist.

shaddap.. im going outside, leave me alone GET OUT OF MY ROOM

  25. By asuaries76 on Jun 18, 2009 | Reply

Wow. Well, number one, I do not celebrate X-mas. So, I don’t feel I am “taking” anything that is being done for me. On all holidays, I just love to be with my family and friends… as would anyone else. Do I feel that a “god” gave them to me? No, as I am an atheist.

Saying that atheists are like teenagers is quite a leap. Would we then counter the argument by saying believers are infants? I think not. It isn’t worth the condescending words.

Joy at Christmas? I’m broke right now because of Christmas. But seriously, we don’t look at celebrating the birth of Christ, but time to spend with our families as most people do. Even Christians.

  27. By Atheist Ad Infinitum on Jun 18, 2009 | Reply

    Not quite.

And even if I did deny my parents, I still know for a fact that they exist. As for god, well, I can’t deny something that doesn’t exist.

  28. By thedonutkid on Jun 19, 2009 | Reply

    My parents actually exist.

  30. By Skyhawk on Jun 22, 2009 | Reply

    Which god?
No one has derived any benefit from an imaginary sky-daddy.
In fact, it has wrought more violence than any other cause in the history of man.

Insulting question, pal. How about this one:
    Are fundies like infants?
Infants **** their pants and have absolutely no knowledge of science.
Infants ignore science, but don’t mind the benefits from it.

You left out one parallel – teenagers, and children in general, are the parents’ hope for the future. Atheists are society’s only hope for a rational future, free of the leftover myths of ancient authors.

I ignore that which doesnt exist? Thats news to me… I am here in this section daily, so I am obviously not ignoring God. In fact, many of you people seem to think that we atheists are here SEARCHING for your God. And yet, he continues to be silent and to play hiding games with us.

And you call us the teenagers?

  33. By Mr.Samsa on Jun 27, 2009 | Reply

Christmas is a human tradition, it has nothing to do with any fictional entity (well, except Santa Claus). Since God does not exist, he could not have provided any benefits.

Maybe because the joy of christmas has more to do with spending time with family and friends than it has to do with superstitious nonsense.

    (‘Santa’ or ‘Jesus’)

  37. By Crystal clear on Jul 3, 2009 | Reply

No. Teenagers are like teenagers. Teenagers don’t disbelieve in the existence of their parents – many simply think their parents are stupid or weird.

Atheists are people who don’t ignore God or hate God or enjoy any “benefits” from God, because they don’t believe in the existence of any God or gods.

I enjoy holiday festivities around Christmastime with friends and family – and I am neither atheist or Christian. Who says one has to believe in your God to have any fun in life?

Actually, your God seems to frown upon people living their lives as the imperfect beings he made them to be, capable of experiencing pleasure and striving to do so – doesn’t make a lot of sense.

  38. By tigris on Jul 6, 2009 | Reply

joy at Christmas is mainly something for little kids. Lots of adults get stressed out about organization and being guilt tripped to buy presents. domestic violence increases over christmas too… (see link)

I am not a fan of organized and obligatory happiness, and I would be perfectly happy to get rid of Christmas…I am only doing some of it for my parents.

Please enumerate other benefits. Christmas isn’t one of them. These days, Christmas produces most benefits for stores.

  39. By Chelseaxoxo on Jul 6, 2009 | Reply

That is such a self-centered statement. You are ignorant. Not everybody believes in what you believe – thankfully. Christmas is not a benefit from God. I personally do not believe there is a God and Christmas is about love and family. It means something different to everybody. Atheists are probably far more intelligent than you.

you are comparing, teen hormones, and people who beleive there is no God?
Being a teen is a hard time in life, and not all teens disobey their parents and such. And if you don’t beleive being a teen is hard, then why not go see how Jesus dealt with ebing a teen? Oh, wait, they don’t cover those years in the bible, I wonder why…

My parents, who by the way created me, told me to find my own path in concerns to religion. So, I did just what my parents told me to.

  42. By Elise L. on Jul 10, 2009 | Reply

Atheists don’t celebrate Christmas for God. It was originally a pagan holiday, you know. And no, Atheists are not like teenagers. They are the adults.
