Interesting theory. "Teens" from every era were sneaking around behind their parents back or keeping things from their parents. I think this generation has the benefit of the internet, and that can be positive or negative. In our house, our parents were alcoholics and drug addicts, they beat us and harmed us mentally and emotionally. We couldn't have "asked" them "stuff" we were busy trying to take care of them and somehow raise ourselves. We surely didn't want to be like them, and they couldn't say a kind thing or encourage us ever, so it wouldn't make sense to "ask" them something, it would have caused us more pain. Sometimes teenagers will take the same advice you give them, even though it is the same advice their parents gave them, but you said it, so it is suddenly a good idea.

Society standards have changed. Some blame the media, some blame the elders, etc.

This is not teens being teens.
I have neva heard of teens sleeping with teachers to such a rampant degree, high school shootings or teens wanting to beat someone up tape it and display it to the world.

There use to be consquences to actions. Parents have let there since of "it take a tribe to raise a child". Parents get mad at teachers for lecturing or disciplining there kid. A lto of parents are completely out of their childs social loop & life. That is why i think kids turn to TV & teh internet for role models and their morals

I gotta tell ya, this is a great question, thanks. Well I am no teen and haven't been one for a few decades now, nor would I want to be in this day and age. As we all know we live in a world of "latch key kids", who come home alone, sad as that may be it's the truth. These kids want questions answered and if you don't know your mom or dad on the level they should, then they're going somewhere else for answers and that is sad too. I agree some of these questions should not be asked on this or talk to their parents. Well.not gonna happen! All we can do is be respectful to them and hopefully give them a positive and uplifting answer since it may be the only one they get.

You didn’t keep stuff from your parents when you were a teenager?

I did.

Everything from my girly mags, to the fact I occasionally smoked pot, and every now and then drank.

I grew up. And I’m neither a pervert, pothead or an alcoholic.

It’s part of being a teenager. You want to rebel. You don’t want to conform. Your parents don’t know sh*t and you don’t want to listen to them.

Then you grow up and realize just how stupid you were.

to be honest, parents always over take the limits,

even with things that will not effect the parent in anyway

parents think there only protecting there children, but really there not letting be children,

parents are causing kids to grow up to fast, become too mature for there age.

e.g yobs,

It's a part of growing up, I bet you did it too. The thing is, if it gets bad you gotta set them down and have a good ol' fashioned one-on-one chat to set things straight. Otherwise, I know I did and you kinda have to expect it to some degree.

Teen entertainment has become big business. The best way to ensure that an impressionable teen will pay money to see your movie or watch your TV show? Tell them that they are smarter than all the adults around them and can be their own boss. It gives them a false sense of superiority and boosts their ego. So now parents are fighting an uphill battle to protect their own children from themselves.

'Teens will always be teens! I bet you were a teen too and know the anwer to this question. I don't know how old you are, but if you were a teen before the millenium, you just didn't have anonimity of internet. The only difference between then and now is the digital revolution. Teens have access to internet and the online community and that's why you see their questions on yahoo anwers.

Parents are a lot different now than even when I grew up (i am 24). Parents now don't punish their kids nearly as much and the punishments are not nearly as effective. It seems parents now are more friends than actual parental figures.

I talked to my parents (to a certain degree) because i respected and feared them. I was afraid of the punishment I would get into if I did something wrong. Now, it seems, most parental punishments are not to be feared.
Dont get me wrong, I still did stuff behind my parents back. I dont think mine was to a lesser degree, just definately less often than it seems now. Look at how teens talk to their parents. Even after geting in a lot of trouble as a kid, I was never brave enough to address my dad as anything other than sir and my mom as ma'am.

Simply charming, they should know a lot about your life because they are responsible for you. They are the ones that are there to make sure you succeed. They can get in trouble for the things you do. I was expelled from school when I was 15. I didnt have to pay the 2k dollars in legal fees and enrollment costs into bootcamp, my parents did. They are responsible for you, and your actions.
