it very well could result in PT SD (post traumatic stress disorder) for the teenager which could haunt them into adult hood. the parent should also be evaluated for their own possible psychosis.

tho it only happened once, that's a horrible thing to happen. It would leave a scar of sorts on the psyche of the child-- Will that child ever truly feel safe with that parent again? Children trust their parents totally & implicitly with their lives--this child can not. Sad. Don't know the effect on the child as an adult. Hopefully, not severe.

Worse, in my estimation, is that it's a sign of other, anger-related undercurrents in that relationship....perhaps more minor, less obvious, but something or series of things led up to the knife incident & it's possible, if not addressed, it could come to a 'head' again.

Teenagers learn how to be a parent by watching how their parents parent them. Chasing anyone around with a knife is unacceptable behavior from anyone. It is irresponsible and ignorant not to mention cruel and unusual. Something should have been done about it when it happened or shortly thereafter. Not talking about it again doesn't make it okay. The parent was wrong and acted in a dangerous and threatening manner. It will leave an emotional scar on the child for the rest of their life. The teenager needs to confront the situation by making it known, first of all and then getting counseling to fully understand what and why it happened. Then, maybe, that teenager will grow up to be a better parent.

Well, I'm a teenager, so I can answer with most certainty.

First of all, I would be scared to death at the time, and then even after the incident I would be scared of that parent, basically I would just try to stay away from them.
Then, as an adult, first of all I wouldn't ever dare to try it on my kids, and my family would probably rarely ever see them.

And no, of course I wouldn't believe them if they said they were just kidding! What kind of sane person would kid about something like that anyways?

This will only worsen the child's thoughts or leave a permanent fear or bad impression in the child's mind. Get anything done with love, not with force.
